Flooded with links

For reasons that are still unclear, Mr. Black's bride said "I do" on Saturday and we partied late into the night. Fun times were had by all and I'm really happy for him. I hope you had a fine extended weekend as well, and that you stayed dry during the freak storm this morning. I woke up early before it rolled in and the sky was downright eerie at 6:00AM, all yellowy and weird.

If I could do it all over again, I'd be a stormchaser like Bill Paxton in "Twister". Except I'd want to be on the priggish team that rolled around in the nice matching vehicles. But alas, I'm just a lowly blogger, so here's what's up on the Cardinal beat from the Memorial Day weekend.

* The baseball team is heading westward for the NCAA tournament, facing off against New Mexico State on Friday at 7:00 in the Tuscon Region. We'll take a closer look at the opponent later this week, but most believe this is a fairly solid draw for the Cards. The team is truly capable of anything from this moment on. They had many highs to the season, sweeping the #1 Cats and rallying for a share of the Big East crown. But there were lowlights as well; a headscratching loss to Western KY and a flameout in the conference tournament in Florida. You can watch McDonnell's boys on ESPNU or ESPN3.COM

* UofL football got a commitment for 2013 in defensive end Marquis Haynes. There's not much on Haynes but the bare bones. 6'3'', 220lbs with offers from West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Clemson, Duke, South Florida and Florida International for what it's worth. He's the ninth commitment to the '13 class, and proves yet again that the Sunshine state is the prime pipeline for the Cardinals under Charlie Strong. The ubiquitous highlight video here for the exceptionally bored.

* James Quick got snubbed in the Rival's Top 100, left out entirely and puzzling anyone that has seen him play. The phenom from Trinity is still perhaps the best talent to come out of Louisville since Bush and Brohm, and UofL fans are still waiting on pins and needles for the symbolic importance (as well as on-field) of taking care of our own backyard first when it comes to recruiting.

I haven't seen Quick play in pads very much, but I saw a lot of him on the basketball court writing for the spectacular Louisville Catholic Sports website. This kid can literally stop on a dime and change direction in a split second without losing speed. My ankles hurt just watching him. Exchange those sneakers for football cleats, and it's easy to envision him getting open pretty much at will. So rankings shmankings, Quick is still a big deal.

* Adam Zagoria reports that Virginia Tech transfer Dorian Finney-Smith will visit the Cards this weekend. And on his heels will be fellow Hokie Montrezl Harrell despite the fact Louisville's scholarship math currently indicates there isn't one available for either. It makes no sense, and thus far, Rick Pitino appears in no hurry to clarify the situation for us.

But, if we're going to experience the bizarro offseason stories that have come to typify our basketball program in recent years, these are ones I like to have. Both of these guys can seriously ball.
