Cards downed on 4th, fall in OT

When anyone asks me, "What would you do?" in a field goal or go-for-it choice. my answer is always the same: "Lombardi always took the points." That should end the discussion.

There's no sugarcoating it, Charlie Strong blundered in his decision to go for it on 4th and inches in OT in a game where his defense had showed near total control. You take the points, you trust your D, you score on the next possession.

But the poor decision was matched by equally poor execution. A bland QB sneak where Justin Burke gave a pathetic effort, getting stood up with no drive in his legs. Blech.

A terrible performance from Burke, who looked like more of a high school QB than D-1 for most of the day. He just doesn't exude any leadership out there and seems to make his reads based on how the play should be unfolding, on paper, rather than what is actually on the field. His INT was costly, and it was really just a matter of time, he was making dangerous throws all day.

A tough loss to stomach. A strange game the Cards should have won. My first major disagreement with Charlie on an in-game decision. I feel ill.

  1. I was at the game cheering for South Florida (For personal reasons, not just because I dont like Louisville). First off how dumb was the halfback pass in the redzone? Louisville was physically dominating USF it seemed. I dont know if USF would have scored in double figures had it not been for Louisville mistakes and bad play calling. Going for it in overtime was an easy mistake. You take the points because 9 possesions out of 10 yesterday there is no way USF scores a TD (that offense made me think they were high schoolers). So take the FG and prolong the game. Even if they match you with a FG then you will have a chane in the second OT. But if you do want to risk it and go for it. You give it to your best player, and the player who had been consistenly getting the ball three and four yards past the line of scrimmage -- Powekl. Going to your second string QB for such an important play was asking too much.

Thought Id share my opinion cause im bored and I hate watching Tom Brady and his boy band hair cut.

  2. One could probably also say that 9 times out of 10 the offense could gain four inches on a quarterback sneak, which was the logic that prevailed in those fateful seconds. But I agree absolutely with you that in such a situation you give it to your best player. Thanks for sharing. Now back to Brady.
